Game Recap

Traveling to play East Burke men’s soccer team on Monday night, the Mountaineers ran into a determined home team. E. Burke nearly got on the board just1 minute and 20seconds into the match. The host team really played inspired soccer as they took the action to the visitors. It wasn’t until the 23rd minute that the visitors penetrated the Cavalier’s defense as Josue Molina put back a rebound off Luke Rikard’s blast for a 1-0 lead. That would be the only scoring of the half as the visiting Mountaineers began to string together a series of close calls. After a bit of a serious halftime speech, the Mountaineers came out with determined attack that resulted in a Landon Wright goal just five minutes into the second period. Josh Scism made a deep run down the right flank and drove a crossing ball 4 yards in front of the East Burke net. Wright drove the cross into the near side of the net that seemed to change the complexion of the match. Mason Nguyen would make the score 3-0 as he drove a 30 yard bomb that dipped just under the crossbar at the 63 minute mark. Travis Wright set up Nguyen on that goal and almost scored one of his own from 20 yards out. Luke Rikard would get several good looks but could not buy a goal on this night as twice he had the keeper beat, only to see the center back clear the balls off the line. Nolan Raby got in on the scoring as he headed a Mason Nguyen corner kick that the E. Burke keeper stopped, only to have Raby put back his own rebound at the 67th minute. Richard Fernandez came in off the sideline to share the shutout with keeper, John Harris IV. Dane Skeith would score the final goal as he took another nice pass from Travis Wright making the final score 5-0. The Mountaineers are now 10-3 in SMAC Conference play with 3 more conference matches to be played in the regular season. They travel on Wednesday to take on East Rutherford before playing their last home match against Burns on Monday. The final regular season match will be played next Wednesday at Shelby. Due to the floods from hurricane Matthew in the Eastern part of the state, several soccer matches had to be rescheduled, therefore delaying the start of the State Tournament. Instead of beginning on Wednesday, November 2nd, the first round matches will begin on Saturday, November 5th.
