Game Recap

The Mountaineers went on the road to play a non-conference match with E. Gaston High School on Thursday night. The JV played first and walked away with a 3-1 victory with Marc Atilano getting a hat trick for the visitors.
The varsity match was a hard fought match with each team moving the ball well in the midfield but not getting too many open looks at the other’s goal. Luke Rikard took a super back up ball from Josue Molina 20 minutes into the first period but had his shot deflected for a corner kick. The Mountaineers would get several corner kicks but were turned away each time by a very aggressive keeper, Ben Winfree. The half ended as it began as both teams retooled for the second period of play. The visitors came out strongly and had a few golden chances to score as Will Robinson had a nice header that sailed just over the bar. Josue Molina took a nicely slotted ball from Luke Rikard only to have his near post shot nabbed once more by Winfree. The Mountaineer defense was solid all night limiting the host school to mostly shots from outside the box that were handled fairly easily by keeper John Harris IV. With 18 minutes remaining in the match, E. Gaston placed a long ball behind the Mountianeer back four that was collected by Carter Beck who shielded the ball at the top of the box. Two Mountaineer defenders tried stand him up but he found a slight opening and blasted a shot from 16 yards out that deflected on Harris in goal for a 1-0 lead.
The Mountaineers mounted quite a valiant effort as they pressed the E. Gaston goal the final 15 minutes but to no avail. E.Gaston would win the contest 1-0. The Mountaineers will resume SMAC Conference play on Monday as they travel to play E. Burke.
