Game Recap

Off to Rutherfordton went the Mountaineers as they squared off in another SMAC Conference soccer match Wednesday night. The Mountaineers started very quickly and jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 5 minutes and 30 seconds into the match. Chase Yow put back a rebound off Josh Scism from 6 yards out for the first tally. Only 12 seconds later, it was Yow that assisted Josue Molina as the second goal came from 10 yards out. The Hilltoppers were not to go down quietly as they scored just 3 minutes later as Zach Scofield would drill a shot from point blank range that beat the Moutaineer keeper to make it a 2-1 game. And a game it was the rest of the half as each team had several good opportunities but could not get on the scoreboard. Once again the Mountaineers came out of the gates quickly as Chase Yow scored his second of the match with a nice assist from Hunter Champion off the direct kick from 23 yards out with just 3 minutes coming off the clock. In the 52nd minute of play, Nolan Raby took a nice feed from Dewi Eagan to make it a comfortable 4-1 lead. Once again, it was the home team that woke up as Colby Behrns would display some fine dribbling skill and blasted a shot past Mountaineer keeper John Harris IV in the 61st minute of play. John Harris had to come up with some fine saves late in the match as the host Hilltoppers mounted a comeback. It wasn’t until the 87th minute that the visitors put the game on ice with the last goal being scored by Luke Rikard off a super crossing ball from Josh Scism for the final margin of victory, 5-2. With an overall record of 15-2, Kings Mountain is now in second place in the SMAC Conference and is set to host the first place conference foe, Chase, on Monday. This will also be a great night of celebration as the Senior Mountaineer players will be recognized and honored at halftime. Match begins at 6 pm.
