Kings Mountain High School
Crest High School came into John Gamble Stadium in Kings Mountain Monday with a goal of trying to secure a first place bid in the SMAC Conference soccer state tournament. Having beaten the Mountaineers earlier by the score of 3-2, a victory would have given them the inside track to the number one seed. This match began with the home team jumping on the visitors with a goal in the second minute of play. Luke Rikard stole an errand pass in the penalty area and buried the ball in the back of the net for the early lead. Three minutes later, again it was Chase Yow who drilled a short range shot that deflected directly to Rikard who wasted no time to put the Mounties up by a pair. Crest would not lay down on this night as the match saw the visitors get on the scoreboard at the fifteenth minute mark. CJ Guest slotted a shot that beat Mountaineer keeper John Harris IV with a shot to the back post to cut the lead to 1. Just five minutes later, it was the Mountaineers that once again applied some pressure and it paid off with Josh Scism scoring as he tucked a shot inside the near post to bring the lead back to 3-1. The half ended with the host Mountaineers on top with what appeared to be a comfortable lead. Early in the second half the Chargers applied some attacking pressure and were awarded with a penalty kick as the ball was drilled at a Mountaineer player who was called for the handball infraction. John Harris for the Mountaineers stared down the Crest kicker as he drilled the penalty kick over the bar to maintain the two goal margin. Ten minutes into the second half, Rikard would complete the hat trick as he drilled another close range shot for a 4-1 lead. The defensive efforts of Hunter Champion, Holden Bullock, Brandon Quevedo-Johns and Will Robinson really worked especially well in the second half as the Chargers were frustrated much of the evening. The icing on the cake came with 8 minutes remaining as Josue Molina took a wonderful diagonal pass over the top of the Charger defense and hammered a low shot to the far post making the final score 5-1. Richard Fernandez came in the last 10 minutes of play in the Mountaineer goal to make an outstanding save on a shot drilled from 30 yards out. Landon Wright nearly had a goal in the last five minutes as the Mountaineers pressed once more. Nolan Raby did an outstanding job in the midfield with the other central midfielder, Chase Yow. Together they shut down a very solid Crest midfield time after time. The Mountaineers are now 14-2 on the season and 8-2 in conference play. They will travel to play RS Central on Wednesday in SMAC Conference play with the Varsity match starting at 6 pm.
