Game Recap

Polk County High School came into Kings Mountain Thursday night for a non-conference soccer match. The Junior Varsity bagan at 5 and had a very competitive match that went down to the last 2 minutes before either team could score. Leighton Harris scored with just over 2 minutes remaining in regulation as he bicycled a shot past the Polk keeper for the only goal of the match. That victory puts the Mountaineer JV team to a 5-5 record under the guidance of head coach Patrick Bradey.
In the Varsity match, the visitors came out of the gates with guns a blazing but could not find the back of the net as keeper John Harris IV was up to the early challenges and denied any shots they had taken in the first half. Nolan Raby would get the Mounties on the scoreboard in the 30th minute of play. He would slice his shot into the far post netting after Josue Neymar Molina beat his defender to the end line and played a perfect back up ball to Raby. The home team would find their stride after that and dominated play over the last 10 minutes of the half, but could not penetrated the Polk defense. The Mountaineers really came out determined to strart the second half and were rewarded for their efforts just 3 minutes into the second half. Hunter Champion took a super cross off a corner kick from Nolan Raby and drove a ball into the right side of the goal for a 2-0 lead. Two and a half minutes later, Josh Scism would score off another throw in from the left sideline as Brandon Quevedo-Johns delivered a long throw to the back post. The final goal of the match was scored by Luke Rikard as he took a nice pass from Dane Skeith on the left flank and slotted a nice ball to Rikard. He beat one defender in the left channel and then shot to the upper 90 on the back side of the goal for the fourth goal of the match. Richard Fernandez came in with 7 minutes remaining to share the third shut-out of the week for the Mounties with keeper John Harris IV. The Mounties played several defenders that did an outstanding job in maintaining the shut-out. Hunter Champion, Will Robinson, Brandon Quevedo-Johns, Holden Bullock and Cameron Johnson combined to keep the sheet clean for the home team. The Mountaineers are now 13-2 on the season heading into next weeks conference matches. Monday has the Crest Chargers coming into town as the Mountaineers are trying to maintain their second place in conference play and secure the number one seed from the Conference heading into the state playoffs. A victory Monday would be a big step in securing that seeding. The week ended with the Mountaineers scoring 10 goals in the 3 game week and not giving up a single goal.
