Game Recap

The Mountaineers visited East Rutherford Wednesday night in SMAC Conference soccer action. The Junior Varsity continued their 4 game winning streak with a 3-0 victory as Marc Atilano score twice with Leighton Harris added one as well. The Varsity match began with East nearly scoring in the first minute of play if it weren’t for Mountaineer keeper John Harris IV smothering a ball at the feet of an East attacker inside the six yard box. From that point, the visitors put on a clinic with great build ups down the left and right flanks. The goal chances were frequent and many from point blank range but the visitors were denied getting on the scoreboard time after time. The East Rutherford keeper, Manny Pimentel, had several key saves during the first 20 minutes of play. In the 21st minute, striker, Luke Rikard took a super pass from the outside right midfielder, Josh Scism and finally beat the East keeper for a 1-0 advantage. Although the Mountaineers would press the East goal on several other opportunities, they could not find the net again before halftime. The Mountaineers came out strong to start the second half as Josue Molina just put one over the crossbar just minutes into the second period. Josh Scism had a golden chance that showcased the quickness of East keeper Manny Pementel once more. Nolan Raby had a super chance only to see his header sail just wide. The Mounties would finally penetrate the East defense in the 71st minute of play as defender Will Robinson got the second ball off a Mason Nguyen direct kick. Robinson slid the ball past the East keeper for the second goal of the match. The Cavaliers would not back down on the night they honored their senior class and put in their only goal of the match with 36 seconds left in the match for the final score of Kings Mountain 2, East Rutherford 1. With that victory, the Mountaineers tied a single season record for number of wins with 17. They play host to Burns High School Bulldogs on Monday at 6 pm. The JV will be playing Crest at 4:30 beforehand.
